Another IDEA award for DSK ISD!

For the second year in a row, DSK ISD has won the prestigious IDEA gold award.
POETREE is a funeral urn that evolves over time as a companion through the stages of mourning. The ashes are placed in the urn and are covered with soil. The family takes the urn home and plants a tree in it. When the tree is big enough, it is time to plant the urn in a garden or a park. Eventually the urn, which is made of a biodegradable material and ceramic, will disappear, and only the tree and the ceramic top will remain, just like a gravestone. Concept imagined by Margaux Ruyant, student Year 3 product design, DSK ISD.

DSK charts course for future transportation designers

DSK Supinfocom is evaluating opportunities for closer ties with automobile manufacturers in India and Europe in order to provide exposure to students in cutting edge technology and tools as well as a challenging environment for pursuing designing as a profession.

The Pune campus, located near Fursungi off NH 9 and spread over 20 acre complete with all international amenities, is being shaped up as a centre of excellence within Supinfocom global network with several students from France andother parts of Europe pursuing their training here.

The infrastructure and tools available at DSK Supinfocom is on par with that available at Supinfocom’s design school in Paris, France. The company is focussed on imparting training in three verticals:transportation design, industrial design and digital design. Transportation designing is focussed on a wide range of transportation solutions. 'One of the key issues we focus upon is to in grain a sense of proportion in our students. A designer, as opposed to anartist, has to be concerned about reaching out or touching maximum number of people through his/her concepts. The design needs to be practical and commercially viable solution, explains Principal, Headof studies, DSK Supinfocom Intern at ional Campus, Philippe Vahe. DSK Supinfocom is offering an international curriculum, which is organised on the practical mode of teaching with extensive student and faculty interaction. It offers courses on professional lines in animation, game designand industrial design with broad verticals.

The school is a result of collaboration between the DSK Group and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of North De France(CCINDF). The French institute functions under the brand name of Supinfocom for animation, Supinfogame for game design and production management, and International School of Design(ISD) for industrial design.‘We are attempting to address the need of local and global companies in automobile and other manufacturing sectors. Global companies are seeking local design talent for better implementation of local taste and culture in product design while companies based in India are looking for students with global experience and discipline,’ said Vahe. He added that many design schools have faculty members who have never worked as professional designers, DSK’s major differentiation is predominantly practical orientation imparted by design professionals. Already, students from DSKSupinfocom are pursuing internship at BMW, Daimler and Citroenin transportation design. It has established a network of leading designers in global epicentres of designing including Paris, Munich,Detroit, Rome among other locations.Typically, OEMs prefer towork with Indian designers in headquarters before enrolling designers in local manufacturing or R&D units around the world including India. ‘One does not typically see path breaking car design concepts churned out byany automobile company in a matter of weeks or months. Car maker like Audi overhauled and rejiggedits design process and ideas morethan two decades ago and are just beginning to see the result of theoverhaul,’ added Vahe.Transportation designing as a specialised field is veering towards environmental friendly designs with focus on better quality interiors and styling inspired by local culture and tastes. The stakes are high for success or failure for the industrial and transportation designer. Students have to be flexible in order to accept change and be prepared for newer tools and solutions in designing concepts. This global exposure comes at a cost, which may be termedsteep by Indian standards but Vahe insists that the value driven approach of the school speaks for itself in terms of placement and demand for admission among budding designers.

'How many design schools can you think of which can coordinate professional designers to oversee student projects and offer internship opportunities for students in leading automobile and engineering companies around the world?' he asked. The school offers a five-year integrated course commencing after typical ten plus two pattern of school education in India. Thus total cost of education could range from 36 to 40 lakh per student. Currently around 170 students are undergoing their undergraduate training in design from DSK's Pune campus, of which around 40 percent are pursuing transportation design as their specialisation. The academics are controlled by the French Institute to maintain the same quality standards of education followed in France. All the trainers recruited by them are full time trainers from France and Europe.

The trainers are not academicians but possess Industry rich experience. Companies also opt for direct involvement in the school through undertaking masterclasses/ workshops. The names of some companies who have engaged with the school include Pininfarina, Renault, Tata Motors UK, BMW, Bentley and Volvo.

Economic Times : India is now a potential design pool

PUNE: There’s a whole new talent dimension that India has yet to cash in on: design. The demand for professionals in this field is going up by the day, as international brands call in on one of the world’s key manufacturing and consumption centres. But with just a handful design schools in the country, it’s an opportunity waiting to be tapped. “There are only five to six good design schools in the country. Had the supply of experienced designers been enough, some of the top manufacturing companies of India would not need to hire design heads from abroad,” says Forbes Marshall director, Naushad Forbes, who is also a visiting faculty at Stanford. The Indian industry can meet just an estimated 10% of the demand for design professionals, as design schools take in only about 500 students annually. “A lot of design companies from abroad are looking to collaborate with Indian design companies. There is lot of cross-cultural design taking place. In areas of clean technologies and eco-friendly design, Indian designers can contribute a lot as we are used to the concept of recycling and reusing,” says Falguni Gokhale, director, Design Directions, the company that designed the water purifier, Tata Swach. The product design teams of multinational companies usually consist of people of various nationalities, and there is a place on these teams for Indians. “As India is a huge market, it is necessary for an MNC to have Indian designers to understand the needs of the Indian consumers,” says Florence Rohart, footwear designer with Adidas, Germany. Institutes like DSK Supinfocom in Pune are looking to tap this opportunity, and recently held a week-long master class with a four-member team of footwear designers from brands like Puma, Adidas, Camper and Newfeel participating. “We are looking for possible internships and placements for our students with big brands in different products,” says vice chairman Shirish Kulkarni. India Inc is filling in some of the supply gap, but we still have a long way to go. Indian automotive companies like Tata Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra and Bajaj Auto have good design talent and studios that match the best in the world. The demand for professionals in emerging markets is particularly encouraging as design as a career in western countries has become saturated and fiercely competitive, says Sudhir Sharma, CEO, Indi Designs and erstwhile founder director of Elephant Design. Further, he says, most developed countries have developed expensive design practices, which are not viable in today’s economy.” Though there is a large number of vacancies, designers eventually start their own business. “Only 20% designers stick to a job,” Mr Satish Gokhale. The competition to get admission to the National Institute of Design is tough while fees at the private design schools are high. The annual fee at private schools is Rs 4 lakh- Rs 5 lakh per student and some of these are five year courses, after Class XII. By Jayashree Bhosale,ET Bureau

Pune Mirror article about DSK ISD footwear masterclass

Master designers offer tips to students. A few Pune students are learning their lessons in footwear design directly from renowned designers of famous brands like Adidas, Puma, Camper and Oxylane. International School of Design (ISD), a prestigious French school, conducted the class for students. World’s reputed designers, who took class, expressed that India has a lot of potential in the world design market. Although the specialised designing is a new concept in India, the opportunities will be great in future. DSK Supinfocom — an Indo-French partnership between Supinfocom Group (France) and DS Kulkarni Group, Pune — had invited the designers all over the world for this master-class workshop. Thomas Murphy of Puma; Kaja Bartel from Camper, Spain; Florence Rohart of Adidas, Germany; and Oliver Lambin of Oxylane, France, addressed the students.

Indian Express article about DSKISD footwear masterclasses

Out-of-box ideas from students floor global footwear designers. Design ideas from the students of city-based DSK Supinfocom International’s School of Design may soon be incorporated into the new products of international brands such as Adidas, Puma, Camper and Newfeel. The students, who underwent a workshop under the guidance of international footwear designers, have come up with some out-of-the-box ideas. “These ideas and the quality of work by students are fresh and new for today’s market,” said Thomas Murphy, who works as a footwear designer with Puma. Murphy was one of the mentors for the workshop along with designers Florence Rohart who has worked with Adidas. Olivier Lambin of Newfeel and Kaja Bartel of Camper conducted the workshop at DSK Supinfocom International’s School of Design last week. Bartel said one of the ideas behind the workshop was to identify talented students who could be accommodated for internships or work in their organisations. “We observed that some of the students are excellent,” she said. Shirish Kulkarni, vice chairman of DSK Supinfocom (SIC) said the school had tied up with prominent footwear brands in order to offer placements and internships to the students. This was the first-of-its-kind workshop arranged last week in the school where around 30 students participated. The idea was to give students an opportunity to work with international professionals so that they could get hands-on training,” said Philippe Vahe, head of studies of industrial design, DSK SIC. He said that companies all over the world look for Indian designers and it was a good opportunity for students to focus on this stream. “The industrial design course is a five-year course and students get to work on product designs, transportation designs and digital designs besides classroom teaching. We have also been providing national and international internships for students,” said Umesh Tashildar, executive director and CEO of DSK SIC.

DNA article about DSKISD footwear masterclasses

International Footwear Designers inspire students. Designers from PUMA, Adidas, Camper and Newfeel were in the city recently. As part of its intensive master classes in footwear design, DSK Supinfocom International School of Design at Manjri invited four senior designers from PUMA, Adidas, Camper and Newfeel to share their expertise in footwear designing with their students. "Footwear is an amazing product to develop. It requires a lot of knowledge in many different fields like sketches, user experience, hard and soft technologies," said senior footwear designer Olivier Lambin, who works for Oxylane in France. He added that they were here to see if there is any potential talent. At a recent press conference, vice chairman of DSK Supinfocom Shirish Kulkarni said that designers are looking for possible tie-ups to provide students with international opportunities through internships, projects and placements. Sharing her experience, senior footwear designer for Camper in Spain, Kaja Bartel said, "The facility in Pune is a place to keep an eye on as far as talent is concerned. I was amazed by the creativity and ideas the students came up with during the week-long workshop that we conducted." DSK Supinfocom is the first international school of design in India, which has a mix of European teachers, Indian and French students, said head of studies, Industrial Design, DSK SIC, Philippe Vahe. "We are here because many companies started arriving in India and they needed Indian designers," he said. Talking about the master classes, Vahe said that the week was devoted to focusing on specific design requirements of footwear design, electronic products, car body, interior car design, colours and trims. "Our classroom is more of a studio than a classroom," said Vahe. Giving an insight to footwear designing as career, Florence Rohart, who works as a designer for Adidas in Germany said, "I have no idea about what they pay a fresher in India, but in Europe, a footwear designer gets a starting package of anywhere between 25,000 to 40,000 Euros per year. There is a lot of potential, but it all depends on how creative you are." She also said it was hard work all the way and it takes between four months and two years for a designer to conceptualise a footwear design, finalise the product and reach the market. Defining the role of a footwear designer, Thomas Murphy, who works for PUMA (Germany), said, "A designer's work is always linked to the consumer's needs with reference to colour, the feel of the material, the shape, the texture and the overall comfort." DSK Supinfocom International Institute offers courses in animation, gaming and industrial design, accredited and acclaimed by Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Valenciennois (CCIV) from France.
