Sculptures - Frozen Shadows

The aim of this project was to make life size sculptures (human or animal figures) for the garden area behind the faculty housing in a way that they appear interacting with the elements of that space. This project is accomplished by a team of 12 students from Animation 3rd year.

The proportioning system for these elongated characters was derived from the work of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, who lived and worked in Paris. The forms he uses are elegant, refined, and classical. Giacometti once said that he was sculpting not the human figure but "the shadow that is cast."

Since he worked with very simple forms and stick figures, it was ideal to choose his style as it would give the students more freedom of working with gestures and line of action. It took four weeks to fi-nish the entire project. The students researched on Giacometti's work, generated characters and situations for them, as well as decided the placement of the characters in that space, made life size armatures, and finished the clay models in a total of ten days, after which, the long, tedious process of plaster molding and fiber casting was carried out by a team of professionals.

The finishing along with the supports was done with the help of welders later. The students then cleaned the fiber models and painted them very carefully.

Arthropods

An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an external skeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages, for example mosquito, spider, crab etc.
The aim of this project was to make larger-than-life metal creatures for the garden area in front of the ISD building. The learning objective was to enable students look into details, understand the importance of anatomy and proportions in bringing out the true character of a form, and to work with different materials. Models of 8 arthropods were created by the18 first year students of DSK Supinfocom in a period of six weeks. Some of the models replicate an existing arthropod, while some were uniquely generated by students by mixing features of two or more arthropods.
