Adobe Photoshop
This is the most powerful 2D software vastly used in the industry in all sectors related to GFX and design. This software is mainly used for image editing, digital painting, image morphing, creative design and for crafting textures for 3D models.
Adobe Flash
This is a vector based software majorly used for 2D animation (tweening), creating interactive java based games used for mobile, has built in scripting language (Java) which helps in creating website or interactive presentations.
Adobe After Effects
When it comes to editing a video and at the same time adding VFX to it, there is no comparison with After Effects. It allows you to add various effects like fire, explosion, noise etc. One of the important features of this software is masking or keying (you can shoot a video in green screen and replace with the desired background according to the directors requirement). There are a lot of similarities in the Photoshop and After FX effects, the only difference is you can animate these effects in After FX. There are other features as well like camera tracking which helps you to composite live action and CGI sequence.
AutoDesk Maya
This software can be used for a lot of purpose like modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, lighting, rendering etc. It’s again the most vastly used software in the industry related to 3D GFX.
AutoDesk Mudbox
It is a tool developed to create HD, high resolution and realistic models for films and games. You can create a model by using primitives inside Mudbox, Mudbox allows you to take a primitive such as a sphere or a cube and insert various amount of detail while still remaining in its primitive status. This tool is handier for the traditional artist like who are into real life sculpting; the technique of creating a model in Mudbox is same as creating real sculptures. The output generated is much faster compared to techniques used before.
